Ingredients:

1 winter squash, such as butternut or acorn squash


Directions:
Stovetop:
1. Peel, seed, and cut in large pieces.
2. Add pieces to one inch of boiling water. Cover, and simmer 20 to 25 minutes until tender.
3. Drain. Mash (if desired). Serve with butter, brown sugar, salt, and pepper.
 
Oven:
1. Do not peel. Wash, cut in half, remove seeds, and place pieces shell side up in baking dish.
2. Bake in a 400°F oven for 30 minutes or until tender (or it can be cooked at 325°F for 40 to 60 minutes).
 
Microwave:
1. Wash, cut in half, remove seeds, and place pieces shell side down in a microwave-safe dish.
2. Add ¼ cup water to the dish. Cover with plastic wrap or a lid and microwave on HIGH about 7 to 8 minutes. Test doneness of squash by piercing with a fork.  Squash will be soft.
CAUTION: When removing plastic wrap, escaping steam is extremely hot.
 
To serve:
Top the squash with one or any combination of the following:  butter, salt, pepper, nutmeg, grated orange peel or orange juice, honey, brown sugar.
